How to Become a Volunteer Firefighter in Maryland

Operational Requirements: You must be at least 18 years old, in good physical condition, and willing to commit to scheduled shifts and training.

We’ll contact you to schedule a 30-45 minute interview after reviewing your application and verifying your references.
Pass a physical exam and background check
If selected to continue, Montgomery County will schedule a comprehensive physical exam at no cost to you.
Begin training and onboarding
Once voted into membership, you will begin the Kensington Basic Orientation Course (KBOC) that meets every Saturday morning for six weeks. After mastering the basics in KBOC, you will enroll in EMT class.

Want to experience a day in the life before applying? Sign up for a ride-along. You’ll join our team for an evening or weekend shift and see what it’s like to respond to real calls. Each person is allowed one ride-along before applying. Availability is subject to KVFD approval and may be rescheduled if needed.
