How KVFD Volunteers Balance Life, Work, and Service
At nearly every Volunteer Information Session, we hear the same heartfelt question:
“How do I balance volunteering with school, work, family, and life in general?”
It’s a great question, and an important one. Life is busy, and choosing to serve your community is a big commitment. But at the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD), we want you to know that balancing service with the rest of your life is not only possible, it’s something our members do every day.
From college students and working professionals to parents and retirees, our volunteers come from all walks of life. What brings them together is a shared desire to serve, and a department that supports them with the flexibility, training, and community they need to succeed both inside and outside the station.
Flexibility That Fits Your Life
Volunteering at KVFD is a commitment, but it’s one we help you manage with flexibility and support. As a volunteer-led department, we know that real life doesn’t pause for service. That’s why we work with you to create a schedule that fits your lifestyle, whether you’re a student balancing midterms, a parent juggling school pickups and soccer games, or a working professional prepping for a big client presentation.
Need to swap a shift because of an unexpected exam? No problem. Have a family weekend planned or a last-minute work deadline? We’ve been there, too, and your team has your back. Shifts can be scheduled ahead of time and adjusted as needed, and you’re never left to figure it out alone. Volunteers at KVFD support each other because we all know what it’s like to balance the firehouse with life outside of it.
Volunteer Firefighter and college student, Ben Burnett, shared:
“KVFD is flexible, allowing me to adjust shifts around exams, studying, and major projects. I’ve even completed a good amount of homework during downtime at the fire station!”
EMT and firefighter Yulianna Portillo echoed that experience:
“Even during my busiest semesters, the support at KVFD made a huge difference… If I needed to step back and recharge, I could do that without question.”
This kind of flexibility and encouragement is what makes long-term volunteering sustainable, and enjoyable.
Support That Helps You Grow
Many of our volunteers start with no emergency services experience, and that’s completely okay. At KVFD, we don’t expect you to show up knowing how to fight fires or perform medical calls. What we look for is commitment, curiosity, and a desire to help.
You’ll receive free, nationally certified training in EMT and Firefighter 1, and more, depending on your interests and path. Whether you’re aiming for front-line firefighting, emergency medical response, or operating critical apparatus, we’ll walk you through it step by step. You’ll train alongside experienced instructors and fellow volunteers who know what it’s like to start from scratch.
Our supportive, mentorship-driven environment is designed to help you succeed, whether you’re brand-new to public safety or thinking about a future career in it. With hands-on learning, access to top-notch equipment, and a culture that encourages asking questions and building confidence, KVFD is a place where everyday people become trained, capable responders, and grow in ways they never expected.
We also offer:
- Flexible shift scheduling for students, parents, and full-time workers
- Free use of fitness equipment at the station
- High-speed Wi-Fi available throughout the station for studying, remote work, and downtime
- Career-building skills and networking opportunities in public safety, healthcare, engineering, and beyond
- Close proximity to Washington, D.C., the Metro Red Line, and major Maryland universities like the University of Maryland, Montgomery College, and more
- Maryland state tax deduction (after 3 years of active service)
- LOSAP retirement benefits for long-term volunteers
- Live-In Program with free housing at the station for eligible members
- Non-emergency volunteer roles
If you’re interested in supporting the mission without emergency response duties, you can join as an administrative member. Admins assist with logistics, fundraising, community events, and other vital station operations.
Purpose That Makes It All Worth It
While structure and support are key, there’s another reason our members make time for KVFD: they truly love this work and the people they do it with.
Many describe KVFD as a second family, a source of strength during life’s busiest and most stressful times.
Firefighter Marsha Aranguez, a 10+ year member, shared:
“KVFD is my second family… When I became a career firefighter, I worried I wouldn’t have the time or energy to continue volunteering, but I love coming back. They’re my family.”
When your service is meaningful and your team feels like home, it becomes something you want to make time for, not something you have to.
