KVFD Live-In Bunkrooms Fully Renovated & Move-In Ready
The wait is over! We’re thrilled to announce that construction on the live-in bunkrooms at Station 5 is officially complete–and they’ll be ready for move-in starting this Summer 2025! This milestone marks a major step forward for the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) and an exciting new chapter for our Live-In Volunteer Program.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters–including Ashe Consultants for their substantial contributions – Station 5’s upper level has been transformed into a dedicated, comfortable space designed specifically for KVFD live-in members. Whether you’re gearing up for a busy shift or winding down after a call, this newly updated space was built with your service–and your well-being–in mind.
A Space Built for Service
The second floor now features a modern, private living environment tailored to the unique needs of live-in volunteers, including:
- Six individual private rooms with new walls, doors, and finishes for enhanced privacy and comfort
- Proper insulation to ensure quiet, energy-efficient heating and cooling
- A shared kitchenette ideal for meal prep and downtime
- Upgraded electrical and lighting systems throughout for safety and convenience
- Programmable alerting systems and speakers in each room, customizable for on-duty and off-duty hours
This renovation goes beyond facility upgrades – it creates a true home base that supports the demanding pace of emergency service work, helping our volunteers rest, recharge, and stay connected. Learn more about the renovations.
Live-In Member Benefits Beyond the Bunkroom
Being part of the KVFD Live-In Program offers more than just a place to stay. Along with training, experience, and camaraderie, live-in members enjoy:
- Free room and board, a valuable benefit for students, early-career volunteers, or anyone looking to reduce living expenses
- Provided bed linens for a hassle-free move-in
- High-speed Wi-Fi and computer access to support remote work or study
- Laundry facilities and a fully equipped shared kitchen
- Access to fitness and training equipment to stay in peak condition
- A prime location just 4 minutes from downtown D.C., 37 miles from Baltimore, and 2 miles from the Metro rail Red Line – making commuting or exploring the city easy
KVFD’s Live-In Program is an opportunity to serve your community, grow your skills, and be part of a close-knit team that values every member’s contribution. Many live-ins use the program as a stepping stone to careers in emergency services, public safety, or healthcare, while others simply want a meaningful way to give back. Whatever your goals, KVFD offers the training, experience, and support you need to succeed.
To be eligible for the KVFD Live-In Program, members must first complete training and demonstrate proficiency in at least two operational roles—such as firefighter, EMT, paramedic, and/or apparatus driver. For most members, this level of experience is reached after about a year of active volunteering with KVFD. If you already have prior training or certifications, you may become eligible even sooner.
Service Has No Age Limit
Live-in firehouse programs often bring to mind young college students or recent grads. At KVFD, we believe that anyone with the passion to serve is welcome–whether you’re starting out, changing careers, or bringing decades of professional experience.
