KVFD Spotlight: Brendan Meehan on Finding Purpose Through Service

This month, we’re proud to spotlight Brendan Meehan, a volunteer firefighter and EMT whose passion for serving others began long before he joined KVFD. Inspired by his family’s connection to service, Brendan has spent more than 20 years serving communities through Fire and EMS. After relocating to the Washington, D.C. area, he was looking for a department with a strong culture, a collaborative team, and a place where he could continue making a difference. He found exactly that at KVFD.

From brushing up on his firefighting skills to finding a second family at Station 5, Brendan shares what keeps him coming back and what he’s learned along the way.

Service As a Family Tradition

Brendan has been involved in the fire service since high school, beginning his volunteer journey in 2001. When he recently moved to Washington, D.C., finding a nearby department with a welcoming environment was a priority.

“After recently moving to DC, I was looking for a station close by with a strong culture,” Brendan said. “KVFD checked every box.”

However, his connection to service started much earlier.

“My father was a lifelong volunteer who instilled in me the value of serving my community from an early age,” he said. “I can still remember riding on fire engines in parades as a kid. Fire and EMS have always felt like a natural calling.”

That early exposure sparked a passion that has stayed with him throughout his life. Throughout his career, Brendan has served in both Fire and EMS, believing each plays an important role in protecting and supporting Montgomery County. Even after more than two decades of service, he continues to seek opportunities to learn, grow, and challenge himself.

Returning to Firefighting

Although Brendan brought years of experience to KVFD, joining the department gave him the opportunity to revisit a part of the job he hadn’t practiced in quite some time.

“In the decade or so before joining KVFD, I had been focused almost entirely on the EMS side of things,” he explained. “Getting back to basics and relearning core firefighting fundamentals was humbling, but also deeply rewarding.”

Relearning firefighting also reinforced one of the biggest lessons Brendan has taken away from his time at KVFD.

“Even the most daunting skills can be broken down into their component parts, practiced piece by piece, and reassembled into something smooth, fast, and safe,” he said.

Whether he’s refreshing old skills or learning entirely new ones, Brendan believes progress happens one step at a time. It’s a mindset that’s shaped the way he approaches challenges both inside and outside the firehouse, and a reminder that growth never really stops, no matter how much experience you have.

Finding A Second Family

Ask Brendan what makes KVFD special, and the answer isn’t the trucks or the equipment. It’s the people.

After serving with multiple organizations throughout his career, Brendan says the culture at KVFD stands apart because of the trust, teamwork, and friendships built both on and off the apparatus floor.

“Collaborative, through and through,” he said. “Whether we’re working, training, or just hanging out together, there’s a genuine sense of camaraderie here that’s hard to find elsewhere.”

That camaraderie becomes especially evident when the call comes in.

“More than any single call, what stands out is the rhythm of this team,” Brendan said. “We can go from a lighthearted conversation to a fully coordinated response in seconds, sometimes without saying a word. Working alongside people who trust each other that completely is something special.”

A Purpose Bigger Than Himself

Volunteering isn’t simply something Brendan does in his free time; it’s part of who he is and has shaped his belief system.

“I believe a society is only as strong as its most vulnerable members,” he said. “Giving back through Fire and EMS feels less like a choice and more like a calling. It’s simply what I’m meant to do.”

That sense of purpose continues to motivate him every time he walks through the doors at Station 5.

When he’s not volunteering, Brendan enjoys spending time with his partner, catching live music, trying new restaurants, traveling, and fostering dogs. Those moments outside the station help him recharge while balancing the demands of volunteering with everyday life.

Thinking About Volunteering? Just Show Up.

If someone is interested in volunteering but isn’t sure if they have the right experience, Brendan’s advice is simple.

“There’s no wrong background for this,” he said. “Come out, spend a couple of shifts with us, and see how it feels. You’ll quickly get a sense of where you fit, and we’ll help you find your path.”

He also wants prospective volunteers to know that while serving at KVFD is a big commitment, it’s one that gives back in ways few other opportunities can.

“This asks more of you than most volunteer opportunities,” Brendan said. “But I can say without hesitation: the more you put in, the more you get back, and what you get back is unlike anything else volunteering can offer.”

Brendan has found the rewards of volunteering go far beyond responding to emergency calls. They’re found in the friendships you build, the confidence you gain, and the opportunity to make a difference alongside people who genuinely care about one another and their community.

Ready to Start Your Journey?

Brendan’s story is proof that there’s no single path into the fire service. Whether you’re returning after years away, bringing experience from another department, or exploring Fire, EMS, or administrative volunteering for the first time, KVFD provides the training, mentorship, and support to help you succeed.

As Brendan puts it, “The more you put in, the more you get back.” For those willing to make the commitment, KVFD offers more than the opportunity to serve—it offers lifelong friendships, valuable skills, and the chance to be part of something bigger than yourself.
