At Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, our members all have a different story of how they came to join KVFD. We recently caught up with 2-year member Ben Morlock to talk about his time at KVFD, how he balances his work and personal life with his shifts, and what his future goals are within the department.
How long have you been a member at KVFD? Why did you decide to join?
I joined KVFD in November 2020. My wife and I had recently bought a house in Station 5’s first-due response area and I was looking for a place to continue volunteering in the fire service. I was a member of another volunteer fire department in Virginia from 2014-2018. I was excited to find a new volunteer fire department right in my own community, about a mile from my house.
What titles, roles, and responsibilities have you held in your time at KVFD?
So far, I’ve been checked off to ride as a charge aide on the ambulance and as the lineman on the engine company. I just recently became an ambulance driver as well. My next step is to work toward becoming an engine officer and driver.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
I’m a new dad – my wife and I just had our first kid in July. I love traveling and spending time outdoors with my family and our dog. I work full time at a major aerospace and defense technology company in their communications department.
What is your favorite part about volunteering at KVFD?
Most volunteer fire departments are located in rural areas and they run relatively few calls every year. KVFD is located in a major urban/suburban area so we get to run a relatively large volume and variety of fire and EMS calls. It’s a great place to gain practical experience in the field.
How has your experience at KVFD had a positive influence on your career or other aspects of your life?
My volunteer job at KVFD is completely different from my paid job, so it gives me an opportunity to learn and apply an entirely different skill set and challenge myself in new ways. Being a member at KVFD is also like having a second family. For example, my fellow KVFD members have given my wife and me so much support since we welcomed our daughter into our family in July.
What would you like to tell someone who is thinking about joining KVFD?
Whether you’re thinking about pursuing a full-time career in the fire and EMS service or you’re just looking for a unique way to serve your community, I highly recommend joining KVFD. We have many members who are career fire and EMS personnel, as well as many others who are professionals and experts in their respective fields. If you show up consistently and demonstrate that you want to learn and grow in your fire service career, the people of our department will gladly invest in you and share their knowledge and experience.
